His groundbreaking research investigates the potential of genetically modified, hypoimmune insulin-producing cells from the islets of Langerhans as a cure for type 1 diabetes. Here’s what he has to say about his research:

"We have shown that genetically modified beta cells can survive and produce insulin in people with type 1 diabetes – without the need for immunosuppressive treatment. These early results are a significant step forward in our research towards a cure."

While the search for a cure continues, Professor Carlsson is also committed to improving diabetes care:

"My long-term goal is to contribute to a cure for type 1 diabetes, but in the meantime, I aim to enhance the clinical management of diabetes and the daily lives of everyone living with diabetes by developing digital solutions that can automate the interpretation of diabetes data."
